Working Group on Higher Education in Africa

Working Group on Higher Education in Africa
Work Programs
The Working Group on Higher Education (WGHE) like the other Working Groups of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) is not a funding mechanism, even thought ADEA requires each of its Working Groups to prepare an Annual Work Program with Budgets for funding. ADEA further requires Working Groups to prepare and present Annual Activity Reports, which its Steering Committee approves in accordance with a format prescribed for all Working Groups.

The programming and activities of the WGHE are, since 2000, guided by the Group’s Steering Committee which is made up of representatives from the African higher education community (Universities, Polytechnics and Teacher Training Colleges), representatives of African higher education policy makers and development partners interested in the development of higher education in Africa and willing to be members.

Over the years, WGHE Work Programs have sought to address several key issues pertinent to the advancement of higher education in Africa, some of which include: Strategic planning; training of university council members; higher education transformation and innovations; HIV/AIDS institutional policies development; information communication technology (ICT) strategic plans development; networks building and regional collaboration in graduate training and research.

The Work Programs and activities of the WGHE do not compete with the programs and activities of its member institutions and agencies. The Group focuses on supporting small-scale pilot projects, especially those that test solutions arising from the Group’s own analysis and discussions of the issues affecting higher education in Africa.

WGHE Work Programs and activities are coordinated on a daily basis by the Association of African Universities (AAU) which also organizes the meetings of the WGHE’s Steering Committee. Where appropriate WGHE invites partners to participate in its meetings and also holds meetings in conjunction with AAU or partners’ events

Since the establishment of the WGHE, information sharing has been an important aspect of the Group’s activities with the objective of broadening mutual understanding of members’ and partners’ perspectives and programs.
