Call for Proposals

Recognizing the difficulties associated with formulating research proposals that coherently link problems, objectives, methodology, planned activities and budget, and translating research results into policy instruments, the Association of African Universities (AAU) launched the Higher Education Research Training Institute (HERTI) Workshop Series. The HERTI aims at exposing young academicians, lecturers and post graduate students to generic social science research skills including quantitative and qualitative research methodologies; higher education research theories and concepts; data management and analysis; report writing; policy development and preparation of briefs; and research proposal writing. The HERTI is also intended to allow participants the opportunity to critically discuss their proposed research and revise their proposals based on feedback from their peers and workshop Resource Persons.

Organisation

HERTI 2007 will be organised at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra, Ghana on 14 to 28 April 2007, and will be delivered through lectures, exercises, assignments, and discussion of relevant books and articles. In addition, each participant is expected to work on a research proposal and make a presentation on it to the group. The proposals will be peer reviewed and revised with the support of Resource Persons. There will be two presentations, the first, in the middle of the Programme after the sessions on methodologies formulation, and on individual basis. The second will be a group presentation and will take place close to the end of the workshop after the sessions on data collection and techniques of analysis are covered. Interactive sessions including library consultation and proposal building exercises are also planned.

Selected research proposals will be circulated to other participants in advance of the workshop. Each participant will be required to review all proposals to facilitate feedback and peer review of all proposals and outlines at the start of the Institute. Two participants will be specifically assigned to each proposal to prepare a brief critique (ca. 5 minutes) for the general discussion. On this basis, and from the general conduct of the Institute, participants will be encouraged to build close collaborative relationships among themselves and with the Resource Persons.
