During the 1990s, the Association of African Universities (AAU) commissioned a significant number of pertinent studies and research papers to better understand the state of higher education in Africa and to plan the way forward. These papers were subsequently published by the AAU and circulated to the higher education community and other stakeholders. Those were the days when electronic circulation was not possible in Africa. Several hard copies of those papers are still available in the Resource Centre of the AAU, many of them getting damaged with time.
Although the papers date back to more than ten years, the issues of higher education in Africa have not changed much, even if the context has. In any case, the 1990s were challenging years for African higher education and the papers provide an excellent historical background to that period; they should be made widely known to the young African academics of today.
It was with this objective in mind that the AAU selected and grouped a number of those papers for publication in the format of a CD-ROM.
