The Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the second edition of its Management Development (MADEV) Training Workshop to be held in collaboration with Mzumbe University in Morogoro, Tanzania 1 -14 March 2009.

The AAU Management Development (MADEV) Workshop series is a new addition to the AAU’s Leadership and Management Programme and a follow-up to the Association’s Senior University Management (SUMA) Workshop Series, which ran from 1991 to 2003. The current series forms part of the AAU Capacity Development Project for the Revitalisation of African Higher Education Institutions (AAU-CADRE), funded by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and is aimed at enhancing the professional skills of managers of higher educational institutions by equipping them with management skills and knowledge that will help them appreciate the environment in which they are operating and effectively use resources at their disposal towards the achievement of organizational goals. MADEV targets Pro/Deputy Vice Chancellors, Vice Rectors, Deans, Deputy Deans, Directors/Coordinators of Institutes and Heads of Academic Departments. This will be achieved through intensive participant interaction over carefully selected case and other material, and lead lectures, in a process facilitated by eminent Resource Persons.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Participants are expected to have experience in operating at a strategic level in an African higher education institution or other comparable organisation, and personal commitment to further learning, career development and progression at the most senior levels. Although MADEV generally targets newly appointed Pro/Deputy Vice Chancellors, Vice Rectors, Deans, Deputy Deans, Directors/Coordinators of Institutes and Heads of Academic Departments, holders of these positions who are in their first term of office as well as persons who are aspiring to these positions, are free to attend.

MADEV THRUST AND METHODOLOGY

MADEV II will be conducted in English and will focus on the following through structured lectures, experience sharing, role-play, case studies and practical exercises:
  • Strategic Thinking and Planning in Management
  • Managing University Faculties and Departments within the African Context
  • ICT in University Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Total Quality Management
  • Financial Management
  • Project Planning and Management
  • Personal Organisation
  • Communication and Public Relations Within the African University Setting
Participants will also have an interactive session with a retired African eminent University Vice Chancellor/Rector/President to learn from best practice.

HOW TO APPLY

To ensure effective interaction and exchange, the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 30, selected on “first come, first served” basis. Registration will be online. Alternatively you may complete the attached form and send to the address below. While participation is open to all involved in higher education leadership, preference will be given to persons holding the positions listed above and particularly to those who are new in those positions.
Please indicate on your application form the topics you would like emphasised in the finalisation of the curriculum.

REGISTRATION FEE

A Registration fee of US$250.00 is payable on registration for instruction, workshop facilities and material, tea/coffee, light lunch, etc. We regret to note that registration cannot be confirmed until the AAU acknowledges receipt of the registration fee. If paid before December 20, 2008, the fee is reduced to US$200.00.

AAU MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING

Participants from AAU member institutions in good standing (see AAU Website: www.aau.org/membership/index.htm) are eligible for a fee waiver as well as a subsidy on travel, board and lodging, but only on the basis of proven need, and at the sole discretion of the AAU.
