Since its establishment in 1967, the AAU has held eleven (11) General Conferences. Prior to the 11 th General Conference, the most recent were held in Accra, Ghana (1993), Lusaka, Zambia (1997) and Nairobi, Kenya (2001).
Each of these Conferences brought together the Association’s member universities, as well as other international, regional and national organizations to address issues of concern to the region.
The increasing membership of the Association - from 92 in 1993 to 135 in 1996, 162 in 2000, and 185 from 44 countries in Africa by 2005 - is further evidence of the demand for its programmes and the impact of the General Conferences in the region. The 11 th General Conference of the AAU was successfully concluded on 25 th February 2005, in Cape Town, South Africa. The five-day Conference was organised in collaboration with, and hosted by, the University of Cape Town. It attracted a record 320 participants made up of leaders of higher education institutions, policy makers, scholars, student leaders, and other stakeholders drawn from various African countries, as well as representatives of donors and international organizations (see PROCEEDINGS).
