University of Mauritius

The University of Mauritius celebrated for the first time, the African University Day. An exhibition was organized on that occasion. Boards were displayed to inform students about African Universities (location in the region, entry requirements, courses delivered, official languages, ...). Emphasis was laid on the role of Universities in the economic and social development of Africa and the involvement of academics in these issues.

The University of the Witwatersrand marked the African University Day on November 12, 1998 with a seminar. Speakers at the seminar were:

  • Prof. Donald Ekong, (Scholar-in-Residence, The Ford Foundation)
  • Dr. Linda Chisholm (Director, Education Policy Unit, Wits University)
  • Dr. M. Quobela (Chief Director, Department of Higher Education)

  •
Dr. Linda Chisholm focussed her presentation on Higher Education policies in the SADCC region while Professor Donald Ekong who is also a former Secretary-General of the AAU gave a historical perspective of the "educational crisis" facing tertiary institutions on the continent and provided an insight on how these might be addressed. Dr. Qoubela enumerated the policy directions for South African Higher Education. According to the report received this was the first seminar of its kind in the history of the University and it is hoped that it will become and annual event which will focus on the goals and development thrusts of tertiary education in Africa.

The Open University of Tanzania

Report by Prof. Geoffrey Mmari, (Vice-Chancellor)

The Institute of Continuing Education of the Open university of Tanzania organized a very successful African University Day celebration. Two papers were presented at a seminar attended by academic and administrative staff, students and members of the public at the main campus of the university with the following themes: "Preparing for a Sustainable Future Higher Education and Sustainable Development" and "Declaration and Action Plan on Higher Education", themes based on the recent UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education held in Paris.

Some of the issues raised were on the need for an enabling political environment, the need for universities to disseminate their research findings, the need to view the whole educational system in its totality and the need to keep student interests at centre stage.
