THEME FOR THE YEAR 2000 - AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES AND THE CHALLENGE OF KNOWLEDGE CREATION AND APPLICATION IN THE INFORMATION AGE

 

12TH - 17TH NOVEMBER 2000

 

1.                    Sunday 12th November 2000

            A.m. Radio and TV Broadcast by the Minister of Youth, Education and Sports, Dr. Alpha T. Wurie on the Significance of the African University Day Celebration with Particular Reference to the Theme of this Year’s Celebration.

 

2.                    Monday 13th November, 2000

            A.m. Repeat Radio Broadcast by Dr. Alpha T. Wurie.

 

3.00 P.m. Panel Discussion on the Theme of this Year’s Celebration at the Conference Hall, Institute of Education, Tower Hill, Freetown

Panelists - Mr. A.N.T. Deen, Mr. John Abdul Kargo, Mr. Oliver Harding, Mrs. Alice Malamah-Thomas, All Librarian or Information Scientists at The University of Sierra Leone

 

Sub Themes - The Role of Information And Communication Technology in Promoting Quality of Training And Research,

 


 

S                     From Conventional Libraries to Electronic Libraries: The role of the African University in the Transformation.

 

Audience - Members of the University Senate and Court, Government Ministries, other Tertiary and secondary institutions, the Private Sector, the civil Society, the Media.

 


 

3.                    Tuesday 14th November 2000

4.0 p.m. Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Professor a.m. Alghali, Professor of Crop Protection, Principal of Njala University College and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University, at the British Council Hall, Tower Hill, Freetown.

 

Theme: Twenty-five years of Research towards the Development of an integrated pest management Approach for sustainable Food Crop Production.

 

Audience: As in (2) Above

 

4.                    Wednesday 15th November 2000


 

(i)                   A.m. and p.m. Radio Broadcast on the Theme of the celebration by Mr. P. K. Saidu, Vice Princiapl of Njala University College and a Library and Information Scientist

 

(ii)                 Library Open Day for all the Libraries of the Colleges and Institutes of the University as well as of the Sierra Leone Law School, namely:

 

(iii)                Fourah Bay College, Njala University College, College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, Institute of Public Administration and Management, Sierra Leone Law School

 

The Open Day involved various activities including short statements by various college/institute officials, exhibition of various posters, library tour, etc. the various posters highlighted activities in, or the importance of the Library as a whole, the cataloguing department, the issue desk, the Sierra  Leone collection, the periodicals department, the textbook collection, the bindery, African index medicus, etc

 

5.                    Thursday 16th and Friday 17th November 2000

            Theatre performance - Institute of African Studies, at Mary Kingsley Auditorium, Fourah Bay College, Mount Aureol.

 

Drama performance of a play entitled “Age to Age” written by Raymond De’Souza George, Senior Teaching Fellow, Institute of African Studies.
