Report Concerning the Celebration of the Day of African Universities to Professor Doctor Vice

President for Graduate Studies and Research Of Cairo University

Introdution

The Institute of African Research and Studies Celebrated the Day of African Universities.  The Policing report is submitted.

The African universities celebrate annually the anniversary of the African universities which is held annually in the 12 th , November of each year.  This year 2000 The secretariat of the African universities union chose this year the topic African universities and the Challenges of creative and applied knowledge in the era of information and knowledge . The Secretariat of  the celebration requested the studying of  two basic topics.

1-      The role of information and communication technology in up grading and imputing performance in training and research.

2-      The role of  African universities in transforming the traditional system of the library into on electronic one.  There is no doubt that both topics are extremely important  for the following reasons:

·        The achievements in the field of information and communication are extremely important for the universities of technology in the filed of training and research which is clearly reflected in graduating people of high efficiency that the country needs for the ongoing development

·        The universities should develop the libraries and use an electronic system . Of course this trend is of extreme importance as the library is considered the window from which the university can see the most modern methods of Science and technology in the whole world thus the library is of extreme importance in developing science and technology in the African countries.

The challenges we are facing the following problems:

1.      Most African countries face financial problems especially centers of scientific research in the universities .

2.      Locking, scientific and technical trained staff to manipulate such equipments of high technology.

3.      The problem of suitable space in which we can place this highly developed equipments.

4.      There is no scientific contact between the members of centers of research and African universities with their peers in the developed countries or even with their colleagues in the other African universities .

5.      We need a scientific plan for the centers and African universities to introduce such methodology.

Solutions

1. There should be a network of contact between the African universities and the union of the African universities is authorized to make contact between the African universities .

2. Scientific symposia should be convened for researchers and university professors who work in the same field in African countries .

3. Encouraging participation in scientific conferences according to the various specialties to get in touch with the scientific progress available abroad

4. To contact scientific international organizations to obtain scholarships and research missions for progressive research .

5. To allocate a reasonable percentage from the budget of the African states for scientific research as the case in the developed countries .

6. To contact the donor authorities to obtain financial funds for technical and scientific training.

By this the first step for achieving the aim which is scientific and applied creativity would be realized in the era of information.
