The conference which was held from 27th - 28th February 2006 at La Beach Hotel, Accra Ghana brought together African Experts on Higher Education, Officials from African Union, Vice-Chancellors, and other representatives of regional research and Higher Education organisations, sub-regional and international organisations, and donor community.
Although Basic Education has been seen, both under Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), as a key factor for poverty reduction and the enhancement of social equity, Higher Education has a key role in producing knowledge as a driving force of growth and progress. Under the prevailing economic conditions in most African countries, the revitalization of higher education can no longer be left to national efforts. Therefore, a regional or even continental strategy is critical. Fortunately the African Union is playing this leadership role in the revitalisation of Higher Education on the continent through relevant initiatives such as this Accra Meeting.
During the two-day workshop being hosted by the Association of African Universities (AAU) and sponsored by the Department for International Development (DFID) in the United Kingdom, participants discussed and explored all higher education current challenges to:
- Provide an understanding of the current debates in the area,
- Identify activities that can be immediately implemented, and
- Identify issues that need further investigation.
This conference, which constitutes the second of the kind after that of Johannesburg held last year, suggests an implementation plan that will come out of the recommendations. |
