STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF MASSIFICATION - ON HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFRICA |
1. Call for Proposals
The Association of African Universities (AAU), which hosts the Working Group on Higher Education (WGHE) of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) announces a CALL FOR PROPOSALS from higher education institutions (universities, polytechnics and colleges of education) and interested research institutions to share experiences in INNOVATIVE APPROACHES to addressing the problem of massification and to participate in an analytical comparative study on the “Effects of Massification on Higher Education in Africa, specifically, on teaching, examination performance, physical facilities, institutional management, financing, and student quality of life.
2. Introduction
The Working Group on Higher Education (WGHE) of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) is proposing to conduct an analytical comparative study on the “Effects of Massification on Higher Education in Africa”. Specifically, the Study will assess the effects of massification on teaching, examination performance, physical facilities, institutional management, financing, and student quality of life. The survey, which is a follow up to the WGHE Innovations Survey conducted in 2003 , will identify and share the experiences of institutions that are addressing the problem of massification through innovative ways and campus transformation, and will produce an analytical Synthesis Report with recommendations to institutions, policy makers and stakeholders in higher education in Africa.
3. Aims and objectives of the study
The aim of the WGHE Study on the Effects of Massification on Higher Education in Africa” is to assess the effects of massification on teaching, examination performance, physical facilities, institutional management, financing, and student quality of life. Specifically, the Study will identify and share the experiences of those institutions that are addressing the problem of massification through innovative ways and campus transformation and will produce an analytical Synthesis Report with recommendations to institutions, policy makers and stakeholders in higher education in Africa.
4. Scope of Study
Given the complexity of the phenomenon, it is necessary that the study go beyond mere descriptive accounts to incorporate appropriate and detailed analysis with recommendations on the key issues to be identified. Although the unit of study and analysis is the individual institutions to be identified jointly and surveyed, WGHE will expect analysis to cover national systems of higher education as well as continental and global trends and impact associated with massification.
5. Expected Outputs
The expected output of the study is a publication that documents the effects of massification with recommendations to stakeholders, but more specifically:
1. A general Literature Review identifying the lessons of international and continental experience of the effects of Massification;
2. Institutional and Country Reports that take account of regional and continental documentary and literature reviews incorporated into a;
3. A Synthesis Report presenting the findings and recommendations of the Study;
4. Presentations of the findings at conferences and other appropriate forums at the request of the WGHE;
5. A Publication of the synthesis report and journal articles.
6. Mode of Submission
A. Five to ten (5-10) page proposal describing your institution’s experiences and innovative approaches to addressing the effects of massification on teaching, examination performance, physical facilities, institutional management, financing, student quality of life etc.
B. A cover letter signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Principal or designated official, indicating the institution’s willingness to participate in the Study, addressed to:

7. Deadline for Submissions
