CALL FOR HOST INSTITUTION - LEDEV WORKSHOP
HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

1.Background
In the urgent task of overcoming the challenges that currently face all African universities, two of the most critical determinants of success are the quality of leadership and the management capacity of senior university staff. Recognising this, the Association of African Universities instituted a series of management workshops from the early 1990s with the objective of:
  • strengthening the management and administrative capabilities of academics in senior executive positions in institutions of higher learning in Africa:

  • providing tools for improving efficiency and effectiveness throughout the institutions; and

  • increasing understanding of issues and problems related to the changing environment of higher education in Africa.

Such Senior University Management workshops (SUMA) were organised in Harare, Zimbabwe (1991); Bujumbura, Burundi (1992); Arusha, Tanzania (1994); Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (1995); Cape Town, South Africa (1997); Abuja, Nigeria (1999); Gaborone, Botswana (2000); Cairo, Egypt (2001); and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (2002).

Upon revising and incorporating the outcome of a survey of similar programmes in Africa and beyond, the AAU has developed a new workshop series separating SUMA into leadership development and management training programmes.

One of the two newly created programmes, the Leadership Development Workshop (LEDEV), focuses on
  • Financial Management: resource mobilisation and allocation; financial analysis, reporting and performance monitoring

  • Institutional Culture, Gender and Change

  • Conflict Management and Resolution

  • Quality Assurance

  • University Leadership and the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

  • ICT and Research and Education Networking

  • Governance of Research

  • Leadership and Governance
