HIGHER EDUCATION MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
1. Background
The critical challenges confronting African universities in the last two decades have clearly underlined the need for major conceptual and structural reforms in order to meet the current demands on higher education. Key among the factors that can make a difference in this endeavour is the calibre and effectiveness of the institutional leadership and management, especially.
As its contribution to resolving the problem, the Association of African Universities introduced a Leadership and Management sub-theme within its Core Programme and launched the Senior University Management (SUMA) Workshop series in 1991. The SUMA workshops which dealt broadly with issues of policy, funding and management, was aimed at strengthening African university leadership and management capacity, to deal with current and future academic, financial and managerial problems. After a review in 2003, the SUMA was spilt into two separate components: Leadership Development (LEDEV) and Management Development (MADEV) respectively. Since 2007, two training workshops have been held in Ghana (West Africa) at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and in Tanzania (East Africa) at Mzumbe University, formerly the Institute of Development Management. The AAU wishes to host the third workshop in the series for the Anglophone participants. The workshops are normally spread over a ten-day period and based on the AAU tailor-made training modules. Experienced resource persons sourced from reputable management training institutions in Africa facilitate the workshop.
2. Purpose and Scope
The AAU is preparing to hold the third Management Development Training workshop (MADEV III) under the sponsorship of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF). In this connection, the Association is now seeking the services of a Management Training Institution in Southern Africa to host the MADEV III Workshop.
The Host Institution’s obligations will include making the necessary logistic arrangements (accommodation, meeting facilities, meals, etc.) and helping engage competent facilitators for the workshop, in collaboration with AAU.
3. Mode of Application
Interested Management Training Institutions should submit their applications, including complete institutional profile detailing experience and suitability for the assignment, either by fax (+233 21 774821) or e-mail to the undersigned by
20th February 2010.
